Additional information

The Regenera Training Programme is part of the EU Erasmus+ project on Sustainable and Regenerative Management of Water-Based Sports and Activities. It supports outdoor water sports professionals and organisations in embedding environmental sustainability and regenerative principles into their practice.

As participation in water sports increases, so does the pressure on fragile aquatic ecosystems. This training addresses the need to balance sport and tourism with ecological responsibility, focusing on how these activities can become drivers of environmental and community regeneration rather than sources of harm.

Rather than viewing outdoor water sports solely as recreation, Regenera positions them as tools for positive change—enhancing local ecosystems, economies, and social wellbeing.

The programme encourages collaboration among key stakeholders—from sports clubs and tourism operators to environmental bodies and residents—recognising that collective effort is essential for meaningful impact.

Through shared learning, innovative solutions, and a strong environmental ethic, the training empowers participants to lead a shift toward regenerative water sports practices.

What Is Regenerative Practice?

Regenerative practices go beyond minimising harm to actively restore and enhance the natural environment and local communities. In water sports and tourism, this means creating experiences that support ecosystem health, community wellbeing, and a deeper connection with nature.

Training Framework: Five Guiding Actions

The training is structured around five key actions identified in the Regenera Catalogue, developed at the start of the project. These actions provide a clear, practical foundation for supporting healthier water environments and more responsible outdoor sport practices.

  1. Adopt zero waste and responsible waste management practices.
  2. Promote and engage in sustainable water sports.
  3. Support and participate in conservation and restoration efforts.
  4. Respect aquatic life and natural habitats.
  5. Inspire others to adopt regenerative practices.

This manual supports the delivery of the Regenera Environmental Education Programme (REEP), designed to teach others about the importance of protecting and conserving our blue spaces. Aimed at all types of recreational users, the programme promotes responsible outdoor behaviour using the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace as a core framework.
