First year of Regenera Water Sport -project has passed and what a great one it was! Our multinational team from Spain, Slovenia, Ireland, Belgium and Finland has worked hard to turn project plans into reality. In this summary of the year, we will present examples of actions and highlights of 2024 related to the project. Explore the website for more information about the project or contact us!
Regenera Water Sport project got an awesome start in beautiful Banyoles in January 2024. During an intensive two-day meeting we dove deep into the key themes, objectives and timeline of our project and visited one of our pilot sites, Lake Banyoles.
The first steering committee meeting in May 2024 was arranged near the Julian Alps in Bled, Slovenia, where we also visited another project pilot site, Lake Bled. During our visit we had very fruitful discussions with conclusions in several matters of the project.
Our first deliverable, The Best Practices Catalogue, was published in July and can be found via the link or at the project website. The catalogue offers thematic principles and basic guidelines with best practices from different countries, events and organizations. So, if you are arranging, organizing or governing sports, events or recreational activities with a connection to water ecosystems, this is definitely something worth exploring!
Each of the pilot sites have accomplished an extensive scientific Vulnerability Assessment of the ecology and water ecosystem of the area with an affiliated SWOT Analysis to categorize each site’s own identity. These findings will also be published in our resources section early 2025.
In this section, we will briefly highlight some other examples of the actions taken and results achieved during the first year of the project.
Guidelines for Communication and Visual Identity were created in the beginning of the project to give the project its needed tools for communication and publications.
A Mapping of Stakeholders has been done in each pilot site to clarify the operating environment in each country.
A Set of Indicators was created to have a framework for the project from Environmental, Social and Economical dimension.
The project has taken a 5-helix Multistakeholder Governance Methodology as a principle to develop and communicate the actions on each pilot site. This means multi-layered approach including public authorities, sport clubs, sport tourism companies, environmental associations and civil society organizations.
Pilot Site Activities and Management Plans are the first concrete steps in implementing new and innovative methods, actions and practices into selected water and sport activities on each site. Three different activities have been selected from each pilot site that are also studied during the whole project as new practices are implemented. So, Interesting times to come!
To keep up the collaboration between all project partners and tasks proceeding we have had monthly project meetings online, which have offered an important platform for keeping up the project workflow. In addition, it has been an important window for innovative and inspirational discussions, assistance and togetherness despite the distance between us.
The second steering committee takes place in Tampere, Finland, the biggest inland city of Scandinavia. Tampere is a city surrounded by lakes and acts as one of the pilot sites of the project. The Finland visit will take place from 19th to 21st of February 2025. During the visit the project partners work face-to-face to tackle possible issues and plan future actions. In addition, the partners get to experience one of the pilot sites and its activities, important project locations and specific challenges.
The Advisory Board supports the project by providing expert guidance to ensure it aligns with other important initiatives, trends and tendencies in Europe, especially in countries not covered by the project itself. By doing so, the Board helps the project grow and makes a lasting impact in promoting sustainable practices in water sports.
The Board members being well-known and established European associations, advocates and campaigners also contribute to the increased visibility of the project milestones, results, achievements and outputs through joint initiatives, events of different kind and their dissemination beyond the project’s framework alone.
The board meets twice a year online to share ideas and advice on strategies and challenges that the project addresses. Here you can find an article related to the first Advisory Board meeting.
