In 2026, the Whole City's Clean-up campaign will be held

Sat 9.5.2026 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

#kokokaupunginsiisteystalkoot

The Whole City's Clean-up will be coming again!

#kokokaupunginsiisteystalkoot

Join the Whole City’s Clean-up campaign and gather a small or larger volunteer group – registration opens on March 25 and closes on April 24.

Let’s do good together and create a pleasant and safe environment for our city.

During the clean‑up, only litter thrown by people will be collected from public areas of the city, such as along bike paths and streets, in parks, and in other public places.

We will provide large waste containers and garbage bags, and as a new trial, one roll of small trash bags per volunteer group. You can also bring a small trash bag or a fruit bag from home if you wish.

NEW in 2026

The Whole City’s Clean-up Campaign 2026 invites the Mayor of Tampere and the Deputy Mayors to join this year’s clean‑up efforts, each with their own volunteer group.

***

All volunteer groups are welcome to send photos of their group and/or the clean‑up activities, and if you wish, also a short text, to if.erepmat@olapisuuk.aniit. We will publish them on these webpages after the event, and we may also use the photos and texts in post‑event communications. Please remember to ask permission before taking photos and include the name of your volunteer group with the images.

In addition, the event website will be further developed during this spring.

Clean‑up locations and areas – Join the clean‑up!

We will update the list of volunteer groups on the website once the registration period has ended.

If you feel like joining the clean‑up, you can use the map provided to find a suitable clean‑up location and join an existing group. The map also shows the meeting point. You’re warmly encouraged to take part!

How do I organize a clean‑up event?

1. Define the area to be cleaned.

2. Appoint a person responsible for the clean‑up event.

3. Decide on the meeting point for volunteers and the locations for waste containers.

4. Fill in the registration form carefully (only Finnish). Registration opens on Wed 25 March and closes on Fri 24 April.

5. Promote your clean‑up event! Digital promotion is waste‑free. You can find the clean‑up poster template here. The clean‑up can begin on Sat 9 May at any time that suits your volunteers and must finish by 14:00 at the latest.

6. Be at the meeting point at the agreed time so volunteers can find the clean‑up location.

7. Review the clean‑up instructions below and guide volunteers on what to collect and how to clean safely.

8. Shortly after the clean‑up, fill in the short feedback (only Finnish) form available on this website. Among all who submit the feedback form, we will draw 10 gift cards worth €20 each to the Pyynikki doughnut café.

Tips for clean-up

How to make your clean‑up event communal, inclusive, well‑organized, and enjoyable for everyone!

A residents’ committee, association, spa, homeowners’ association, or other partner provides coffee and pastries—such as buns, doughnuts, or traditional Finnish pancakes—for the volunteers.

The clean‑up group hands out a roll of dog‑waste bags to dog owners in the area.

An association hosting the clean‑up has purchased litter‑pickers for its own use, and these are used during the event.

A homeowners’ association rewards each volunteer who fills a trash bag with a small treat.

A local shopkeeper donates grill sausages for a post‑clean‑up barbecue.

Plastic bags from local stores make excellent collection bags; in some areas, shopkeepers have donated these to volunteers.

At the same time, for example, a parents’ association organizes a yard flea market, swap event, or another activity, creating a lively community day.

One association or community challenges another group to join the clean‑up effort.

The clean‑up event in the area is promoted on Facebook and Instagram to reach more participants and build local engagement.

Instructions for clean-up

Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto

Deliver one 600‑liter waste container to the agreed location. Inside the container there will be rolls of garbage bags and, as a new trial, one roll of small trash bags per volunteer group. The rolls can be easily removed from the clean container by tilting the container onto its side.

Collect the garbage cans + possibly the garbage bags next to them and larger garbage found in nature (e.g. car tires, bicycles, batteries) to the correct address right after the clean-ups.

Collection of garbage cans starts on Saturday at 14:00 at the end of the cleaning time, when the collected garbage must be with the waste department.

For Clean-uppers

In the clean-ups, only garbage thrown by people is collected from the city’s public areas, such as bike paths and streets, parks and other public places. It is NOT intended to collect sand or leaves, because their place is not among mixed waste. Sandblasting sand and leaves are mechanically removed from common areas.

Normal garbage is collected

  • In the smaller garbage bag you take with you or
  • from a large garbage bag by rolling it into the smaller garbage bag
  • You shouldn’t fill the garbage bag completely to be able to transport it and the bag can be closed better if it doesn’t fit in the trash can.
  • If the large garbage can is full, put a full garbage bag closed next to it.
  • You can always empty the garbage in your bag into a large garbage can, because these clean-up wastes do not need to be bagged in garbage cans.

Larger garbage found in public areas (e.g. bikes, batteries, car tires, scrap metal…) is placed next to the waste container.

Hazardous waste (batteries, paints, fluorescent tubes, etc.) do not belong in waste bags or in dustbins!

If you find any larger waste in the public areas (e.g. refrigerator, washing machine, sofa, etc.), report it using the environmental damage notification form.

Wear your own gloves – let’s take care of the safety of the workers!

Of course, we hope that the amount of garbage would have decreased in Tampere, but part of the decrease in garbage can also be explained by Ylen Miljoona’s garbage bag campaign, inspired by which many people have said that they collect garbage from public areas more actively.

As we told you in connection with the Whole City’s Clean-up, we announced the number of garbage bags collected in the clean-up stalls at 572 pcs (5 kg garbage bags) on the pages of Ylen’s Million Garbage Bags campaign. Go Tampere!
